Observing a Candle

Last week in class my we did a lab. Called Observing a Candle. In this lab we learned about the physical and chemical properties of a candle when being lighted and unlighted. My lab group discovered when the candle was unlighted the physical properties were, the candle was blue and the tip of the candle was white and fared easily. As for the chemical properties for when the candle was unlighted, it was flammable and made up of wax. Know when the candle was lighted the tip turns black and the candle starts loosing it's shape , making it shorten. Those were all physical properties. Therefore the chemical properties for when the candle was lighted were the candle was burning gradually. Causing the the was to melt and eventually harden once the candle was blown out by carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide was made with vinegar and backing soda. Together they start to bubble and fizz and blow out the candle. As a result of the carbon dioxide blowing out the candle it created a gas known as smoke. Which made this a chemical reaction. In my opinion I liked this lab because it was fun and we should do more labs more often.

Two Interesting Facts About Candles:

*Do not use water to put out a wax fire because it only makes the firer larger.
*Never leave a candle untended.
